Bio
Ray Gracie was a wartime recruit who arrived at St Kilda during the player shortage of the Second World War. Originally from the Melbourne reserves, he crossed to the Junction Oval in mid-1943 and broke into the senior side the following season. A handy forward option who could find the goals, Gracie played 14 consecutive matches in 1944, booting eight majors and providing a consistent presence in the Saints' attack during a challenging era for the club. Despite establishing himself in the starting lineup, his VFL career was confined to a single season, and he transferred to Prahran in the VFA the following year as regular players began to return from service.
