Bio
Recruited from Cooee in the North West Football Union, Ray Groom arrived at Melbourne as a talented Tasmanian prospect who quickly adapted to the rigours of VFL football. He established himself as a versatile utility capable of playing key positions at either end of the ground, though he is best remembered for his contributions at centre half-forward in the Demons' celebrated 1964 premiership victory over Collingwood. While he was a consistent performer who tallied nearly a century of games, his league tenure was ultimately cut short by his off-field ambitions in the legal profession. Groom retired from the VFL at just 24 years of age to return to his home state, where he eventually transitioned into a high-profile political career that saw him serve as the Premier of Tasmania from 1992 to 1996.
