Bio
Arriving at St Kilda in 1960 after a convoluted recruitment saga that saw him courted by Richmond, Carlton, and Melbourne, Ray McHugh came with a significant reputation as a teenage goalkicking prodigy from Sandhurst in the Bendigo league. Once at the Saints, he established himself as a versatile key position utility, valued for his strong overhead marking and ability to plug holes at centre half-back, in the ruck, or up forward where he once booted five goals against Collingwood. While he was a serviceable contributor during the team's gradual climb up the ladder, McHugh’s career is often defined by its agonizing timing. After playing his final VFL game in 1965, he departed to become the inaugural captain-coach of Frankston in the VFA, missing out on St Kilda’s historic 1966 premiership triumph by a single season.
