Bio
A tough-as-nails recruit from Redan in the Ballarat Football League, Ray Murphy was an imposing 189cm figure who arrived at Arden Street with a reputation for uncompromising physicality. Originally hailing from Dunnstown, he famously drew the admiration of Jack Dyer, who described him as a "hard-hitting potato digger" who feared nothing on the field. Murphy slotted straight into the senior side in 1957, playing 18 games in his debut season and appearing set for a long tenure as a key pillar for the Shinboners. However, his career was cruelly cut short after a serious car accident between seasons left him battling internal injuries and significant weight loss. Although he bravely managed two senior appearances early in 1958, medical advice forced him to hang up the boots immediately, denying him a place in North Melbourne's preliminary final side that year.
