Stats
Bio
Recruited from the Essendon Stars, Ray Powell was a versatile half-forward and utility player whose best football unfortunately fell between the club's two premiership triumphs of the 1940s. While he debuted during the Bombers' 1942 premiership campaign, he did not feature in the Grand Final side, eventually establishing himself as a key senior regular during the arduous war years. His standout season came in 1944, where he booted 43 goals to lead the club's goalkicking, including a career-high seven majors against South Melbourne, and was recognised with the Valuable Services award. Despite carrying a heavy workload during this period, Powell found himself on the fringe as Essendon returned to powerhouse status, managing just four games in the 1946 premiership year before departing Windy Hill to continue his career with Brunswick in the VFA.
