Bio
Arriving at South Melbourne with a reputation as a prolific ball-winner, Ray Preston was recruited from City United in the Goulburn Valley after previously starring for West Coburg and Silvan. A tenacious rover who had already tasted premiership success and individual accolades in country football, he broke into the Bloods' senior side in Round 2, 1953, against Essendon. He managed seven appearances in the red and white during that season but struggled to retain his place in the lineup and was delisted the following April. Preston’s football journey found its true peak shortly after his departure from the VFL, as he moved to Wangaratta and dominated the Ovens & Murray Football League, winning the prestigious Morris Medal in 1955 to cement his standing as a premier country footballer.
