Bio
Recruited from Williamstown in the VFA, Ray Stewart was a tall defender who played the majority of his football during the First World War era. He established himself at Richmond in 1915, becoming a regular contributor in the Tigers' backline for three seasons where he was known for his defensive accountability rather than attacking flair. His career is best remembered for an unusual mid-season transfer in 1918; after appearing in the opening round for Richmond, he crossed to arch-rivals Carlton, where he immediately found a spot in the senior side for the remainder of the year. Stewart managed just one more game for the Blues in 1919 before his VFL career concluded, marking him as a serviceable wartime player who bridged the gap between the two clubs' premiership eras without capturing a flag himself.
