Bio
Hailing from Maffra in country Victoria, Ray "Whippet" Walton arrived at St Kilda after winning a club Best and Fairest with his local team. Standing 185cm, he was a tall defender who combined key-position size with the distinctive closing speed that inspired his nickname. Walton became a regular fixture in the Saints' backline during the late 1950s under coach Alan Killigrew, often tasked with curbing opposition forwards during a rebuilding period for the club. He played the majority of his football in his first three seasons, but as St Kilda began to assemble its celebrated "Golden Era" list, he found senior opportunities harder to secure. After managing just a solitary match in 1961, he departed the VFL scene having served as a reliable stopper during his five years at the Junction Oval.
