Recruited from Mansfield in the Waranga North East Football Association, Ray Yeoman was a diminutive but skilful wingman who played a vital role in Hawthorn’s transformation from perennial strugglers to a competitive force. Standing just 174cm, Yeoman relied on his pace and ball delivery to hold down a regular spot in the senior side, contributing nearly 50 goals across his six-season tenure. He etched his place in club history as a member of the breakthrough 1957 team that contested Hawthorn's first-ever VFL final, a landmark Semi-Final appearance against Carlton. Yeoman also featured in the Hawks' historic first victory over Collingwood at Victoria Park in 1960, a significant psychological hurdle for the developing squad. His VFL career ended with unfortunate timing at just 25 years of age, departing the club at the conclusion of the 1960 season—missing out on Hawthorn's maiden premiership by a single year.
