Bio
Recruited from local side Auburn, Reg Barnes was a wartime addition to the Hawthorn list who helped the club field a team during the resource-scarce final years of the Second World War. Standing 178cm, Barnes was a mid-sized utility who made his senior debut in Round 4, 1944, gaining an opportunity while many established VFL stars were absent on military service. He managed four games in his debut season and added another two in 1945, playing a disciplined role in the side without registering a goal. His brief tenure at Glenferrie Oval concluded as the war ended, typical of the many depth players who served their clubs dutifully during the conflict before making way for the return of regular servicemen in 1946.
