Bio
A Richmond local recruited from South Melbourne Districts, Reg Whitehead was a prolific scorer at the reserves level who struggled to translate his dominance to the senior stage. Despite topping the Tigers' reserves goalkicking table in consecutive seasons (1920–21), the key forward managed just two senior appearances before departing for the Melbourne Districts League to play with Camberwell. His impressive form there, including a 68-goal haul in 1924, prompted the newly promoted Hawthorn to recruit him for their inaugural VFL season. Whitehead holds a unique place in history as the full-forward in the Mayblooms' first-ever VFL match—fittingly played against his former side, Richmond—but after failing to hit the scoreboard in the historic defeat, he was immediately omitted and never appeared at the top level again.
