Bio
Recruited from the Tasmanian club Latrobe, Reuben "Chum" Reid was a centre-half-back whose brief VFL career was defined more by bad luck and a famous "what if" than on-field longevity. Arriving at Punt Road in 1924, his momentum was repeatedly stalled, first by a suspension for charging Carlton star Horrie Clover and later by a broken leg sustained in a country exhibition match against Ararat. While he struggled to cement a permanent spot in the seniors, Reid inadvertently played a role in football history by alerting Richmond officials to the talent of his former captain-coach in Tasmania, Ivor Warne-Smith. Although Richmond acted on the tip-off, they ultimately lost the future dual Brownlow Medallist to Melbourne on residential rules. Reid cleared to VFA club Brunswick midway through the 1926 season, later becoming a tram driver and coach of the Tramways football team.
