Bio
Born into the prominent De Garis family synonymous with the Sunraysia district's development, Rex De Garis arrived at St Kilda via the Prahran Association side. A lightly framed but energetic wingman, he became a regular fixture in the Saints' lineup during the early 1920s, offering drive through the midfield for a team often battling the lower reaches of the ladder. His career followed an unusual trajectory; after three consistent seasons at the Junction Oval, he spent 1924 as captain-coach of Corowa in the Ovens and Murray League, only to return to St Kilda for a final VFL campaign in 1925. Following his league retirement, De Garis established himself as a respected journeyman coach in country Victoria, leading sides in Nhill, Rochester, and Sorrento.
