Recruited from Parkdale, Rex Hunt established himself as a formidable key position player at Richmond during the club's golden era under Tom Hafey. A strong-marking forward with a thumping left-foot kick, Hunt topped the Tigers' goalkicking in the 1969 premiership season and featured in a second flag triumph in 1973. Despite these successes, he departed Punt Road following the 1974 season to join Geelong, where he immediately asserted his value by leading the Cats' goalkicking list in 1975.

Hunt's tenure at Kardinia Park was brief, and he moved to St Kilda in 1976 to play out the final three years of his VFL career. While best known as a forward, his later years saw him utilized in defence, where his physical presence and reading of the play remained effective assets. He retired with over 200 games and two premierships to his name, a substantial on-field record that is occasionally overshadowed by his subsequent rise as one of football's most eccentric and high-profile commentators.
