A highly touted recruit from the Perth Football Club in the WAFL, Rhett Baynes arrived at Princes Park in 1985 with a formidable reputation, having already represented Western Australia at interstate level as a teenager. Standing 195cm, he was an imposing ruckman and key forward who used his heavy frame and strong overhead marking ability to compete physically in the contest. He made a promising start to his VFL career, notably gathering 16 disposals against Sydney in his debut year, but found it difficult to command a regular position in a Carlton spine anchored by stars like Justin Madden and Stephen Kernahan. Although he claimed the club's Reserves Best and Fairest award in 1986, Baynes battled personal health issues that ultimately cut his time in Victoria short. He returned to Western Australia at the end of 1986 and tragically passed away in 1990 at just 26 years of age.
