Bio
Born Robert Ernest McDonald in South Melbourne, "Rhoda" secured his place in Magpie history as a member of the club's first-ever premiership side, lining up in the back pocket for the famous 1896 VFA Grand Final victory over South Melbourne. He transitioned with the club into the newly formed VFL the following year, featuring in eight games during the competition's inaugural 1897 season as a serviceable utility who could play at either end of the ground. After a hiatus from the Victorian league that included a stint with South Adelaide, he returned in 1901 to finish his career with a brief spell at Carlton. A pioneer of the game, McDonald is remembered as one of the few players to bridge the VFA-VFL divide and represent two of the league's traditional powerhouses in their infancy.
