Bio
Recruited from West Adelaide with pick 47 in the 2008 National Draft, Rhys Stanley entered the AFL system renowned for his extraordinary athleticism, possessing the speed and vertical leap of a much smaller player. During his six seasons at St Kilda, he struggled to find a consistent positional home, oscillating between key forward, defender, and backup ruck roles while battling various injuries. Despite showing flashes of brilliance, including a memorable five-goal haul against Fremantle, he remained a tantalising but unfulfilled prospect when the Saints traded him to Geelong at the end of 2014 in exchange for pick 21.
At Kardinia Park, the coaching staff entrusted Stanley with the primary ruck duties, a move that initially drew mixed reactions from supporters due to his fluctuation in form and durability. However, he evolved into a unique structural asset for the Cats, using his elite tank to run opposition ruckmen into the ground and drifting forward to impact the scoreboard. His career trajectory was fully vindicated in 2022 when he played a pivotal role in Geelong's premiership side, shedding the tag of inconsistency to become a premiership ruckman. Now a veteran of over 200 games, Stanley stands as a testament to persistence, having transformed from a raw athletic utility into a reliable senior figure.
