Bio
Hailing from the small Victorian town of Cobden, Rhys Unwin arrived at Essendon via pick 61 in the 2024 National Draft, joining fellow local export Zach Merrett at the Bombers. The lightning-quick small forward built his reputation with the GWV Rebels as a high-pressure livewire with elite speed, having recorded one of the fastest 20-metre sprint times at the draft combine. His AFL debut in late 2025 provided a memorable twist of fate; while a busload of 150 Cobden residents originally travelled to Melbourne to celebrate Merrett’s 250th game, the skipper’s late withdrawal saw them instead cheering on Unwin, who capped the occasion by booting his first career goal. A crafty left-footer capable of pinch-hitting in the midfield, Unwin is currently establishing himself as a dangerous ground-level threat in Essendon's forward half.
