Teams

Recruited from Woodville-West Torrens in the SANFL, Richard Champion arrived at the Brisbane Bears ahead of the 1991 season, joining a club that was fighting for relevance and on-field success. A versatile key position player, Champion was primarily utilised as a fullback where his close-checking style and disciplined spoiling made him a key pillar of the defence, though he possessed the athleticism to swing forward and impact the scoreboard when required. He became a fixture of the side during the Bears' progression from cellar-dwellers to preliminary finalists, endearing himself to the Queensland crowd with his competitive spirit and showmanship.

Champion remained a loyal servant through the merger with Fitzroy, continuing his career with the Brisbane Lions until chronic knee issues forced his retirement at the end of the 2000 season. Although he narrowly missed out on the club's historic premiership hat-trick that began the following year, his contribution to the club's culture and stability during a decade of service was significant. He departed the game as a Brisbane Life Member and a highly respected clubman who helped bridge the gap between the struggling Bears era and the Lions' impending dynasty.
