Recruited from the Eastern Ranges with pick 11 in the 2001 National Draft, Richard Cole arrived at Collingwood as a highly rated prospect known for his rebound and poise across half-back. He quickly became a regular contributor during the Magpies' contending years, notably playing in the 2003 Grand Final, but struggled to maintain consistency as his tenure progressed. After falling out of favour with the coaching staff, he was traded to Essendon at the end of 2005 in exchange for a second-round draft pick, offering a chance to rejuvenate his career under Kevin Sheedy. The change of scenery did not spark a revival, as persistent injuries and form issues limited him to just seven appearances for the Bombers before he was delisted following the 2007 season.
