Bio
Recruited from Central District in the SANFL, Richard Cousins arrived at Footscray as a highly regarded mature-age prospect taken with pick six in the 1986 National Draft. A towering figure at 196cm, he came to Victoria with a reputation for strong aerial work, having won his SANFL club's best and fairest award shortly before being drafted. Cousins played his best football in 1988 when he shouldered the number one ruck duties following Andrew Purser's departure, polling eight Brownlow votes and finishing second at the club for total marks. Although he struggled to replicate that peak form in later seasons due to injury and selection issues, he served the Bulldogs as a capable tall utility during the club's turbulent financial era before departing in 1991.
