Stats
Bio
Recruited from Central District in the SANFL, Richard Lounder holds the historical distinction of being taken with the first overall selection in the 1987 National Draft. A towering ruckman standing over 200cm, he arrived at Richmond with significant expectations but initially remained in South Australia for a season before finally joining the Tigers in 1989. His VFL career began in spectacular fashion when he booted four goals on debut against North Melbourne at the MCG, momentarily appearing to justify the club's heavy investment. However, he struggled to adapt to the pace of the competition and issues with fitness saw him manage just three subsequent appearances without scoring another goal. Lounder was delisted shortly after, returning to state league football and remaining a prominent example of the speculative nature of the draft's formative years.
