Bio
Arriving in the VFL via an unconventional pathway, Richard Murrie was a South Australian product from Sturt who was recruited by Footscray after spending a season in the QAFL with Mayne. Standing 189cm, he quickly established himself as a steady and reliable key defender at the Western Oval. Murrie was known for his long kicking and mobility for a big man, becoming a defensive mainstay for the Bulldogs throughout the late 1970s before seeking a fresh start at Kardinia Park.
Crossing to Geelong in 1980, Murrie found himself fighting for a spot in a competitive lineup. Although he played in the Cats' 1981 Preliminary Final loss to Collingwood, he often oscillated between the seniors and the seconds, notably playing in back-to-back reserves premierships. He concluded his league career with a brief single-season stint at Richmond in 1983. A reputable football journeyman, Murrie later found success in the VFA, where he captain-coached Box Hill to a Division 2 premiership in 1986.
