Bio
Recruited from Southern Districts in the Northern Territory, Richard Tambling entered the AFL with massive expectations as the fourth selection in the 2004 National Draft. His career became inextricably linked to the player selected immediately after him, Lance Franklin, creating a comparison that often overshadowed Tambling's own contributions. A pacy midfielder and half-back with the ability to break lines and find targets inside 50, he played over 100 games for the Tigers. However, his time at Punt Road was frequently interrupted by inconsistency and injury, preventing him from fully delivering on the elite potential he displayed as a junior or silencing the critics focused on the draft order.
Seeking a fresh start following the 2010 season, Tambling was traded to Adelaide in exchange for draft picks. The move was intended to revitalise his football, but he struggled to cement a spot in the Crows' best 22, often finding himself playing at SANFL level for Sturt. He managed just 16 senior games over three seasons in South Australia before being delisted at the end of 2013. While he carved out a respectable 124-game career at the highest level, Tambling's legacy remains defined by the burden of expectation placed on early draft picks and the sliding doors moment of the 2004 draft.
