Recruited from North Ballarat, Richard Walter joined Hawthorn during a period of sustained on-field success for the club in the late 1970s. He made his debut as a teenager in 1977 and operated primarily as a rotation forward, demonstrating a consistent ability to find the goals when given the opportunity at senior level. However, Walter's career was largely defined by the immense difficulty of cementing a spot in a premiership-calibre side; he was effectively squeezed out of a forward line dominated by icons such as Leigh Matthews and Michael Moncrieff. Unable to secure a regular position in the senior 22, he played a fringe role over four seasons before parting ways with the Hawks at the end of 1980.
