Bio
Recruited from Brunswick juniors, Richie Saunders was a solid defender whose career was largely defined by the difficulty of cracking into a dominant Richmond side. The son of former VFA footballer and long-serving trainer Ern Saunders, he joined the Tigers in 1933 but struggled to hold a regular spot in a team that reached consecutive Grand Finals. Although he missed out on senior finals action, his quality was validated when he won the 1934 Gardiner Medal as the reserves competition's best and fairest player. Saunders eventually sought greater opportunity at Fitzroy in 1935, where he played the majority of his career matches over two seasons before his time in the VFL concluded.
