Bio
The son of Sandover Medallist 'Digger' Thomas, Richie Thomas was already a premiership player and best and fairest winner with East Perth before World War II interrupted his career. He arrived in Melbourne in 1941 for an Army physical training course, sparking a brief recruiting war between Carlton and Essendon that the Bombers eventually won. A robust, high-leaping half-back, Thomas made an immediate impact in an undefeated four-game cameo that included a Semi Final victory over Richmond. However, his military posting forced him to depart just weeks before the Grand Final, denying him a place in the season decider, though he eventually resumed his decorated career in the WAFL after the war.
