Bio
Recruited from Yarrawonga in the Ovens and Murray Football League, Rick Kennedy became a formidable presence in the Footscray defence throughout the 1980s. After making his debut in 1981, he quickly established a reputation as an uncompromising full-back who relied on immense physical strength and disciplined close checking rather than rebounding flair. His ability to shut down the era's powerful full-forwards made him a cornerstone of the Bulldogs' backline during a period where the team was renowned for its scrappy, hard-nosed style of play under Mick Malthouse.
Kennedy's standing at the Western Oval was cemented in 1986 when he won the Charles Sutton Medal as the club's best and fairest, a significant achievement for a defensive stopper. His leadership qualities were further recognised when he was appointed club captain, leading the side during the 1988 and 1989 seasons. A representative for Victoria in State of Origin football, Kennedy remained a key figure in the senior lineup until his retirement in 1991, departing as a highly respected defender who embodied the grit of the Footscray side of his generation.
