Bio
Recruited to Adelaide via the rookie list as a mature-age prospect with a basketball background, Ricky Henderson carved out a respectable niche as a versatile utility capable of playing off half-back or on a wing. While he became a regular fixture in the Crows' lineup, often relying on his endurance and precise disposal to link play from defence to attack, his tenure at West Lakes was occasionally interrupted by soft-tissue injuries. Despite playing 90 games over eight seasons, he was delisted by Adelaide at the conclusion of the 2016 season, leaving his AFL future in doubt at 28 years of age.
Handed a lifeline by Hawthorn as a delisted free agent, Henderson not only extended his career but played arguably his finest football in the brown and gold. Reinventing himself as a premier running wingman, he utilised his elite gut-running to become a prolific ball-winner, culminating in a career-best 2019 campaign where he averaged nearly 25 disposals and finished runner-up in the Peter Crimmins Medal. He retired in 2020 as a smooth-moving outside runner who successfully defied the typical age curve to produce elite output well into his thirties.
