Recruited from West Adelaide with pick 37 in the 2015 National Draft, Riley Bonner established himself as a rebounding defender distinguished by a penetrating left boot. throughout his eight-season tenure at Port Adelaide, he was primarily tasked with breaking lines from the back half and taking kick-ins, occasionally drifting forward to utilise his long-range kicking ability. Despite his capacity to gain significant territory, Bonner struggled to deliver consistent form or cement a permanent spot in the Power's best 22, often oscillating between the senior side and the SANFL before being delisted at the end of 2023.
St Kilda offered Bonner an AFL lifeline via the Pre-Season Draft, recruiting him to add experience and run to their defensive unit. He played 19 games in his solitary season at Moorabbin, shouldering a heavy workload early in 2024 as a primary distributor for Ross Lyon. However, as the Saints looked to regenerate their list, he was not offered a contract for the following year. He departed the AFL system as a centurion, remembered as a damaging ball-user who could hurt opposition zones when afforded time and space.
