Recruited from the Murray Bushrangers, Robert Campbell began his career on Hawthorn's rookie list before establishing himself as a reliable pillar of the Hawks' ruck division. While rarely a prolific possession winner, Campbell was highly valued for his astute tap work, defensive accountability, and willingness to drift back to support the defence. His career peak coincided with the club's rise under Alastair Clarkson, where he shouldered the primary ruck duties and played a crucial, selfless role in the 2008 Premiership victory over Geelong.

Campbell's time at Hawthorn ended prematurely when he was forced to retire at the conclusion of the 2009 season due to a chronic knee injury. After a year out of the game, he attempted a surprise comeback when Melbourne selected him in the rookie draft, hoping to add experienced depth behind Mark Jamar. However, the physical demands of AFL football proved too difficult to sustain, and he managed just a handful of appearances for the Demons in 2011 before retiring permanently. He is best remembered as a disciplined premiership player who maximized his talent through hard work and determination.
