Bio
Recruited from Newborough in the Latrobe Valley, Robert Ireland was a solidly built utility who managed a brief VFL career with Fitzroy at the turn of the 1970s. Standing 180cm and weighing 85kg, he possessed the physical attributes to compete in defensive or contested roles but found opportunities scarce in a Lions side coached by Bill Stephen. Ireland made his debut late in the 1969 season against Melbourne, holding his spot for the final two rounds, before adding three more senior appearances the following year. Unable to cement a permanent position in the starting lineup, he left the club after five games without registering a goal.
