Bio
Robert Polkinghorne joined Hawthorn as the younger brother of dual premiership defender David Polkinghorne, arriving at Glenferrie Oval during a dominant era for the club. A solid mid-sized utility, he faced the formidable challenge of breaking into a lineup stacked with premiership stars. He made his senior debut in 1979 and served as a depth player for the Hawks, managing sporadic appearances across two seasons while the team remained a perennial finals contender. With opportunities limited by the strength of the senior list, he played just five games before departing the VFL scene at the end of 1980. The Polkinghorne name returned to the elite level decades later through his son, James, who carved out a substantial career with the Brisbane Lions and Essendon.
