Bio
Recruited from the Western Jets with pick 19 in the 1993 National Draft, Robert Stevenson was a talented key defender who debuted for Essendon as a 17-year-old in Round 1, 1994. Initially viewed as a potential long-term pillar for the Bombers' backline alongside fellow teenager Dustin Fletcher, his development was derailed by persistent hamstring issues and the difficulty of breaking into Kevin Sheedy's powerful defensive unit. He missed the entire 1995 and 1996 seasons at senior level before making a brief return late in 1997, only to be delisted at the end of the year. The Western Bulldogs offered him a lifeline with pick 47 in the 1997 National Draft, but Stevenson was unable to crack the senior side during the club's run to back-to-back preliminary finals, spending two seasons at the Whitten Oval without adding to his 11 career games.
