Bio
Recruited from Castlemaine, Robert Thompson was a versatile utility capable of rotating between the back pocket and a roving role. He graduated from the Under 19s program to make his senior debut in 1968, but his time at the top level was severely restricted by a recurring battle with chronic cramps that limited him to just eight games over four seasons. While he struggled to cement a permanent place in the senior side, he remained a valuable contributor to the club's depth, notably playing in the 1968 Reserves premiership victory. Thompson left Windy Hill at the end of 1971 to play for Subiaco in the WAFL and Preston in the VFA, eventually returning to Essendon in the mid-1970s to serve as an assistant coach for the Under 19s.
