Recruited from Wodonga in country Victoria, Robert West was a prolific ball-winning midfielder who found himself the victim of arguably the strongest squad depth in VFL/AFL history. Drafted by the West Coast Eagles in 1990, he struggled to break into a powerhouse engine room featuring the likes of Peter Matera, Dean Kemp, and Chris Mainwaring, managing just a handful of senior games despite dominating at the state league level where he won the 1992 Sandover Medal with West Perth. Seeking greater opportunity, West was traded to Footscray for the 1994 season, where he featured in a finals campaign before moving to South Australia to join Port Adelaide in the SANFL. After starring in the Magpies' 1995 premiership and winning their best and fairest award, his career was tragically altered by a severe off-field assault that left him fighting for his life, though he recovered to eventually see his son, Connor West, follow in his footsteps at the Eagles.
