Bio
Robert Wiley established himself as one of Western Australia's premier rovers with Perth before crossing the Nullarbor to join Richmond in 1979. Already a decorated WAFL player, the Kalgoorlie-born midfielder immediately impacted the VFL with his polished skills, evasiveness, and dangerous goal sense. He became a vital component of the Tigers' midfield rotation, most notably playing a key role in the club's dominant 1980 premiership victory where he booted three goals in the Grand Final. Despite his light frame, Wiley was renowned for his courage and ability to win the ball in traffic, consistently contributing on the scoreboard throughout his five seasons at Punt Road.
After returning to the WAFL in 1984 to captain-coach Perth, Wiley was enticed back to the top level to join the West Coast Eagles for their inaugural season in 1987. By then a veteran in his thirties, he provided crucial experience and on-field leadership to the fledgling side during their entry into the expanded competition. While his playing stint with the Eagles was brief, restricted to a single season as the club established its footing, his career remains significant for successfully bridging the gap between the traditional state leagues and the national era. He is remembered as a classy, high-impact rover who achieved success on both sides of the country.
