Bio
Recruited from Ringwood where he had already established himself as a standout talent, Robin Close burst onto the VFL scene in 1968 with immediate impact. He was named the recruit of the year and capped off a stellar debut season by playing on a half-forward flank in the Grand Final against Carlton. A versatile attacker capable of playing as a key forward or roaming further up the ground, Close was renowned for his strong hands in a marking contest and a deadly accurate drop punt. He quickly became a reliable avenue to goal for the Bombers, frequently finishing near the top of the club's goalkicking tables, often serving as the primary support to the likes of Ted Fordham and Alan Noonan.
His career trajectory hit a significant hurdle in 1974 when a broken leg restricted him to just five games, interrupting what had been a consistent run of form. Close fought his way back to play several more seasons, notably kicking a bag of seven goals in a match in 1977, before eventually retiring from VFL football in 1978. A Life Member of the Essendon Football Club, he continued his involvement in the game in country Victoria, playing for Myrtleford and serving as captain-coach for Benalla in the Ovens and Murray Football League.
