Recruited from Preston Scouts, Rod Cobain progressed through the Fitzroy thirds to make his senior debut in 1966. A versatile utility who was naturally suited to the centre or ruck-roving, he was frequently shuffled around the ground to plug gaps in a struggling Lions lineup, often finding himself matched against the era's biggest names. After 27 games in the VFL, Cobain left Brunswick Street midway through 1969 to carve out a significant career in the VFA, first with Box Hill and later with Preston. A schoolteacher by trade, he eventually moved to the Ovens & Murray League, where he featured in a premiership with Wangaratta Rovers before finishing his playing days as captain-coach of Yarrawonga.
