Bio
Rod Hughes arrived at Moorabbin with a strong reputation from Tasmania, where he had been a premiership player with Scottsdale and represented his state in 1975. A rover by trade, he was recruited to add depth to the Saints' midfield rotation during a difficult era for the club. He earned his opportunities during the 1977 season, a struggling campaign that saw St Kilda finish with the wooden spoon, where he managed seven senior appearances and booted three goals. Although his time at the elite level was brief, Hughes returned to the Apple Isle as a respected figure in Tasmanian football for his achievements prior to crossing Bass Strait.
