Bio
Recruited from East Fremantle after a stellar WAFL career, Rod Lester-Smith joined Hawthorn as a mature-age player in 1984 and made an immediate impact with his raking left-foot kicking and strong overhead marking. Primarily operating as a dashing half-back flanker or winger, he peaked during the 1985 season, winning the Peter Crimmins Medal as the Hawks' best and fairest in a side packed with legends, although the year ended with a Grand Final loss to Essendon. Despite missing out on Hawthorn's premiership success in 1986, his ability to generate drive from defence made him a vital component of the club's mid-80s lineup.
Lester-Smith departed Glenferrie Oval to join the Brisbane Bears for their inaugural season in 1988, recruited to inject much-needed experience and professionalism into the fledgling franchise. He became a key figure during the club's difficult formative years at Carrara, often used to steady a young defence under pressure. While injuries and age eventually slowed his trademark run, he served the Bears for four seasons before retiring at the end of 1991, remembered best as a damaging rebounding defender who successfully translated his WAFL form to the highest level of VFL football.
