Bio
Recruited from Mentone Grammar, Rod Owen burst onto the VFL scene as a 16-year-old sensation at St Kilda, creating history as one of the league's youngest ever debutants. A mercurial full-forward with strong hands and an explosive lead, he possessed the raw talent to tear games apart and frequently booted big bags of goals when confident. However, his long tenure at Moorabbin was marred by injury and well-documented off-field instability, which prevented him from becoming the consistent superstar he promised to be. After walking out on the Saints to play in the VFA, he was thrown a lifeline by Melbourne and later finished his career at the Brisbane Bears, where he famously kicked eight goals in a match against Fitzroy. Ultimately, Owen remains one of football's great "what ifs," a player of immense natural ability whose career was fragmented by personal battles rather than a lack of skill.
