Bio
A towering ruckman recruited from the VFA, Rod Payne arrived at Melbourne after a protracted clearance dispute involving Prahran and St Kilda. Standing 196cm, he finally broke into the side in Round 8 of 1970 following a hamstring setback, going on to play 13 senior games in his debut season. Despite showing promise as a mobile big man, his VFL career was cut short when he retired in early 1971 to focus on business commitments. Payne returned to Prahran, where he cemented his legacy as a club icon, playing in the 1973 premiership and earning selection as the first ruck in the Two Blues' Team of the Century.
