Bio
A local product recruited from St Albans, Rod Stokes worked his way through the club's development pathways to feature in an Under-19s Grand Final before making his senior debut against South Melbourne at Lake Oval in 1971. Utilised primarily as a defender, he played five senior games in each of his two seasons at the top level but struggled to cement a permanent spot in the backline, spending the entirety of 1973 in the reserves. Disillusioned with his lack of opportunity at Kardinia Park, Stokes was enticed by former Cats champion Billy Goggin to cross over to Geelong West in the VFA, a move that revitalised his career. He became a defensive stalwart for the Roosters during their golden era, culminating in a premiership medallion as part of the historic 1975 Division 1 Grand Final victory over Dandenong.
