Recruited from the local Richmond fourths, Roger Dean debuted as a teenager in 1957 and evolved into the spiritual leader of the Tigers during the club's golden era under Tom Hafey. Standing at just 170cm, Dean was a rover and forward pocket whose game was built on unyielding courage and defensive pressure rather than flashiness. He played with a physicality that belied his size, becoming renowned for his tackling and willingness to burrow into packs to win contested ball, traits that saw him win the club Best and Fairest in 1964 during a lean period for the team.

As the Tigers transformed into a powerhouse in the late 1960s, Dean's experience and grit became vital. He played a key role in the drought-breaking 1967 premiership and ascended to the captaincy soon after, famously leading the side to the 1969 flag. His longevity was remarkable, spanning 17 seasons that bridged the gap between the struggling lineups of the 1950s and the ruthless dynasty of the 1970s. Dean retired in 1973 as a revered one-club player and undoubtedly one of the toughest competitors to ever wear the yellow and black sash.
