Bio
Recruited from St Peters East Bentleigh, Roger Ellingworth graduated through the Melbourne Under 19s to become a handy utility for the senior side in the early 1980s. He played 41 games for the Demons, though his output in his final seasons was hampered by a persistent hand injury that forced him to wear a protective glove during matches. Following a reserves premiership in 1984, he requested a move to Hawthorn, sparking a protracted clearance dispute that saw him briefly sign with Moorabbin and reject a late overture from Richmond to secure his preferred transfer. His time at Glenferrie Oval was ultimately derailed by further injury setbacks, restricting him to a solitary senior appearance in 1986 before his career wound down. He holds a unique place in trade history as the last player to cross directly from Melbourne to Hawthorn for 25 years until Cameron Bruce broke the drought in 2011.
