Teams

Recruited from South Fremantle via the rookie list, Roger Hayden carved out a reputation as one of the most composed and skilful small defenders of his era. While statistics often failed to capture his true impact, his ability to execute elite evasive manoeuvres in the defensive 50 and shut down dangerous opposition small forwards made him an integral part of the Fremantle backline. His clean hands and precise distribution allowed him to operate as a calm architect of defence, rarely looking flustered even under immense pressure.

Unfortunately, Hayden's career was heavily curtailed by a series of significant injuries, ranging from a punctured lung to recurring soft tissue problems, which restricted him to just 128 games across 11 seasons. A key contributor during Fremantle's breakout 2006 finals campaign, he remained a vital figure whenever fit but was ultimately forced into retirement in 2011 after suffering a broken leg. A loyal one-club servant, Hayden eventually transitioned into coaching at Fremantle, solidifying his legacy as a highly respected figure in the club's history.
