Bio
Born in the South Australian Riverland town of Berri, Ron Battams arrived at St Kilda via the Royal Australian Navy rather than a traditional SANFL pathway. Stationed at the Flinders Naval Depot (HMAS Cerberus), he was recruited to the Saints' list in 1952 while serving his country. A utility standing 182cm, Battams managed to squeeze in three senior appearances and a goal during the 1952 season, but the strict demands of military service ultimately curtailed his VFL career. He was subsequently posted to New South Wales, where he continued his football journey with the Sydney Naval team in the NSWFL, claiming their best and fairest award in 1954. His brief tenure at Junction Oval serves as a reminder of the many servicemen whose top-level football opportunities were dictated by their posting locations.
