Bio
Recruited from the University Blacks in the amateur competition, Ron Bickley was a highly versatile utility who quickly adapted to the rigours of VFL football in the late 1940s. A "coach's dream" capable of plugging gaps anywhere from the midfield to the back pocket, he was noted by contemporaries for his football intelligence, ambidextrous kicking, and a deceptive "two-way turn" that frequently wrong-footed opponents. Despite the logistical challenges of travelling from Upper Ferntree Gully for training and matches, he became a reliable contributor alongside club legends like Bill Stephen and Butch Gale during his three seasons at Brunswick Street. Bickley remained a devout "Royboy" long after his on-field career concluded, serving as a dedicated supporter and eventually holding the distinction of being Fitzroy's oldest surviving player until his passing in 2020.
