Bio
A local product recruited from Box Hill Churches, Ron Black was a defender who found himself in the thick of the action during Hawthorn's difficult early years in the VFL. He established a place in the side during his debut 1927 season, but his promising start came to a jarring halt in Round 18 against Richmond at Punt Road, where a collision with the boundary fence resulted in a broken leg. The severe injury forced him to sit out the entire 1928 season, and while he returned to the senior side in 1929, his VFL career wrapped up shortly after. Black subsequently moved to Camberwell in the VFA before forging a decorated country football legacy, twice winning the Charles Butler Medal as the Ovens and King Football League's best and fairest player while representing Whorouly.
